How to Add XML and HTML Sitemaps to Your WordPress Website

Sitemaps

In one of my previous blog posts I shortly described both XML and HTML Sitemaps and their functions. You can refer to this post at any time by clicking this link to get an overall idea of the subject.

In this post I’ll give you a short tutorial on how to install both Sitemaps. It’s a very easy task and should take you no more than just a couple minutes.

Let’s start with the XML Sitemap.

1. Log in to the admin panel of your WordPress website. On the left side navigation, mouse over the ‘Plugins‘ menu item and click ‘Add new‘.

2. Type in the search box the name of the plugin you’re looking for. In this case it’s ‘Google XML Sitemaps‘ (by Arne Brachhold). Then, click ‘Search Plugins’ and, when you find it, click ‘Install Now‘.

3. Now, when you have your plugin installed, click ‘Activate Plugin‘.

4. When your plugin is activated, you can move on to the next step. Go to the ‘XML Sitemap‘ which you can find under the ‘Settings‘ tab in the navigation.

5. Now, just click on the ‘Click here‘ button to build the first sitemap.

6. And… you’re done!

Now, you can see your XML Sitemap under this link: www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Google and other search engine bots should find it themselves. Additionally, you can submit it in Google Webmaster Tools.

That’s how your XML Sitemap should look:

You have just added the XML Sitemap to your WordPress website! Wasn’t that easy?

And now time for the HTML sitemap.

The process of adding this sitemap is very similar to the one above so you can take a look at the above screenshots, but I’ll write the steps one more time to make everything clear.

1. Go to your admin panel. On the left side navigation, click on the ‘Plugins‘ tab, and then ‘Add new‘.

2. Type in the search box the name of the plugin you’re looking for. In this case it’s ‘Simple Sitemap‘. Then, click ‘Search Plugins’ and, when you find it, click ‘Install Now‘.

3. Now, when your plugin is installed, click ‘Activate Plugin‘.

4. After activation, go to the ‘Simple Sitemap‘ which is in the ‘Settings‘ tab in the navigation.

5. Now, copy the given shortcode ([simple-sitemap]), mouse over the ‘Pages ‘tab and click ‘Add New‘. Type in ‘Sitemap’ as a title. Then, paste the above code in the content area.

6. Add a link to the newly created page on every subpage; for example, in the footer.

Yes, that’s it!

I hope the above steps and screenshots will help you in adding sitemaps to your website. If you had any other questions, leave the comment in the box below.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve used the XML Sitemaps plugin, but not the Simple Sitemap. Do you use the Yoast SEO plugin? If so, do you think the XML sitemap feature provided with it is as effective as the XML Sitemaps plugin?

      Hi Carrie,
I don’t use WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast but as far as I know it’s one of the best SEO plugins and for sure its XML Sitemap feature is very effective.

  2. Hi.. Thanks for the useful updates.. you have described it very nicely..Keep it UP…

This might be an odd question.
Can both plugin be installed in one site or will it create a conflict?

    Thanks
